A Bedroom Update with Closet Curtains

I am STILL in the process of putting the finishing touches on our bedroom.  The last time I had posted about it, I had just added some really cheap window treatments to the windows.  They are holding up really well. You can read about that here...

What I had been fighting with, was what I was going to use for closet doors.  When we moved in we took the doors off the closets because they were weird and bulky. (We actually used those doors for matching his and hers work-space in our garage.)

I've always loved the look of curtains on closets.  So I went with the same curtains I used on the windows.

Window Treatments On A Budget

Well, I'm home from work today with the kiddo.  It is supposed to get down to -36 degrees with the wind chill.  The hubby braved it....I hope he makes it home ok tonight.  He has a 45 minute drive.

 

Anyhow....

One of my recent projects has been our master bedroom windows.

Our bedroom has lacked those "final touches" since we moved in.  I knew curtains would pull the room together -- even if they weren't $200 plus dollars.  I'm sorry, but I just can't justify paying that kind of money for something that just hangs there. But that's me.

 I did a quick google search on "DIY Curtains" and "DIY Curtain Rods" and came up with a ton of ideas.  In the end, I did something completely different.

Here is our room "before" the curtains. (Not the actual before before.  I will post that soon!) I could have probably tidied our bed a bit, but that didn't happen.  The room just looks bare and a bit bachelor.  Wouldn't you agree?

I went to Target and found cheap Cafe Rods for $3.00 a piece and sheer curtains for $5.00 a piece.   I thought sheer would soften the room a bit without making it too girly.  I wanted my husband to like the room too :)

I even hung the cafe rods myself.  Normally I have my husband do that stuff for me, but I figure I need to start doing these things myself :)  Plus, he gave me his old power drill after he got a new one.  Probably a little hint.....haha.

For just under $20.00, our bedroom finally looks pulled together.  

Excuse the dog.  He doesn't care if he photo bombs or not. 

 

I have more decorating to do in this room as well as adding curtains to our closet doors.  So stay tuned for another reveal!  This room is like night and day from what it was when we moved in.

Bathroom Light Fixtures in Metallic Glaze

After using metallic glaze for the first time on a pair of side tables  I sort of wanted to paint everything in my house metallic.  The wall lights in our bathroom are old and outdated.  But they have a neat look to them that we kind of enjoy.  We thought about replacing them, but we thought they might add a little character to the space.

And....they were the perfect little victim's for my metallic glaze craze....

Not bad.  I think the metallic glaze helped jazz them up. You cannot tell they were ever gold.

A Miss Mustard Seed Dresser

This week has gotten away from me.  It's already Thursday -- and I'm not prepared for today at all.  I'd really like to crawl back into bed....but then there's this thing called a job. 

 

Anyhow...Miss Mustard Seed caught my attention big time with this Apron Strings dresser.  I wish I lived closer to her because this would totally be in my house right now....

 

 

A Fall Living Room

Sometimes when I'm looking around Pinterest I just have to stop and think, "Wow, I wish MY house looked like that".  Unfortunately it doesn't BUT there is a lot of inspiration at The Happy House.  Krista really has a knack for decorating!  I especially love the fall window and bunting piece :)

This dresser/TV stand fits in perfectly with the rest of her living room.  The color is darling.

DIY Heart Picture Frame

Recently I posted about my Simple Table Confetti. Not only was that project simple and cheap, but there was another project that accidentally came out of it.  

This little heart picture frame -- isn't it darling?

So now, this little heart picture frame can go a few ways for me. One - it will look cute at my wedding along with my DIY Simple Table Confetti's.  Two - it just looks cute on my TV stand.  Three - it will be the perfect decor for Valentine's Day!

Just a quick recap of how I put this thing together. 

Things You Will Need

Frame

Decorative Paper (I used old music sheets)

Card Stock

Scissors

Mod Podge

1. - Read here on how to get your heart cut paper. 

2. - Cut your heart paper and card stock to fit your frame.

3. - Use Mod Podge to glue the heart cut paper to your card stock.

4. - Finish by cutting it down to fit perfectly into your frame.

Easy peasy!! Now I have more confetti to do, so I will have more of these picture frames to do also.  All FREE using materials I already had. LOVE!

Red Painted (and Stained) Dresser Redo

This cute red painted dresser wasn't always so pretty. In fact, she was really scary when we picked her up (for only $15 through craigslist.) You can read about that thrifty day here.  I will spare you the gory details today but think lots of cob webs and a bad odor.

Right away I knew her home was going to be in my living room, underneath my TV :)

At first, there was some flack about whether or not this was going to be the best choice of color for the space.  Butttt....it looks really nice and I'm glad I kept with my vision for the piece!

How did I do this transformation? Keep reading to find out!!!

I had a small pot of red paint I wanted to use but I knew it wouldn't be quite enough.  So I mixed a tad of white paint with it.  Of course what we have here is a pink dresser.  Now THAT would have been a bad choice for my living room :)

But once she was dry, I took a rag and some wood stain and got down to business turning that pink into a deep rustic look.  This part is pretty fun and not as near as hard as distressing with sandpaper.  Can you tell the difference after the stain? 

Here is what I used.

Just a bunch of old paint and stain I had laying around.  I'm pretty happy this stuff is getting used up.  I think I've been storing it for two years! 

The Mr worked his carpentry magic and made some shelves for the two drawers I was taking out.  This stuff is pretty cheap at your local Menards or Home Depot.

He also drilled out the holes for my new hardware. Without this guy I would get nowhere with my furniture projects...no joke!

And....here is my new TV stand.  I absolutely love this thing. There is a ton of space to store DVDs, remotes, and other electronic accessories.  

The hardware was purchased at Hobby Lobby -- and the most expensive part of this project.  Totally worth it though.

Summer Project Recap

I don't know about you, but these cold and chilly days that are starting to hit us can take a hike! I just hate being cold! Plus, I'm being reminded that in just a few short days, summer will be long gone. Boo.

Since those long days of summer are about to come to an end, I thought I would recap on some of the projects that went on around here throughout the summer.  And just in case you missed any of them, now is your chance to get caught up!

Something about going back and seeing all the fun projects from summer really makes me wish it wasn't over.  But I'm also smiling at the memories of each and every one.

Transforming a Soup Jar Into Decorative Bathroom Storage

I've been wanting to do this project for a awhile. In fact, I've had all the materials for as long as I've wanted to do it.  Finding the motivation to sit down - in one spot - for a little bit was the problem. It's impossible for me to do anymore. There is just never enough time in the day to do everything that needs to be done!

The before picture is a little embarrassing.  I've been using this comb/brush/mirror setup for at least a year. It was all I had at the time to hold the stuff and it just happens that's how it has stayed. 

I had a larger soup can that I knew would work well to hold the comb/brush/mirror trio.  The rope was purchased - for no apparent reason - while at Home Depot for another project. And I always have a glue gun and glue on hand. 

I did rough the can up a little bit with a sanding block. Sometimes hot glue gets fickle with what it will stick to. I wanted the surface to be as hot glue friendly as possible.

Then I just wrapped and hot glued -- around and around.

Seriously, this probably took me all of three minutes. And I was like, "What? It took me months to sit down to do this and it only took three minutes??"

Three minutes and about three dollars....if that.

Now the comb/brush/mirror trio looks a little more "high-end" than before. 

I like it because it holds it all a bit more secure than the other one -- and it is soooo much prettier :)

Gosh I love a good -- functional DIY project!

It's Overflowing

Messy Yellow Desk

Last week I posted a little peek at a few things I had been doing at my Think Yellow...  post.  One of them was this little yellow desk. 

It's not your usual paint job. My fiance thinks I may have ruined it lol. But everyone else has commented on how cute it is sitting in it's new spot in the craft room.

Yellow isn't usually my "go-to" color for painting (anything).  It was a toss up between the yellow and the teal I had from previous projects...I really just needed to get rid of the paint. Teal won to begin with...but when I opened it I found that I had not sealed it well enough and it was hard as a rock! 

So yellow it was. 

The original plan had been to paint it yellow and then use a brown glaze to antique it. But after a few brush strokes, that went out the window also.

The paint just ended up being more of a dry brushed look.  And I really love how it turned out. 

And it was fun to paint.

Perfect Dresser Redo

When I saw this dresser the first thing I thought was....I NEED to get a dresser just like this and do the same thing...IMMEDIATELY...lol. And it was one of those early morning perusing Pinterest on my phone while I wake up type deals. All logic out the window....I thought about the dresser all day.

I could really put one of these in each room of my house. Same knobs and pulls....everything. Pink does not go with my decor...but who cares!

What's Happening At TJN....

There are so many projects going on around here lately, and I've been sort of MIA. I thought I would give you a peek at what I'm currently working on -- in my free time.

I've been trying hard to finish this ONE dresser (that's been sitting around for a month)...and every time I plan on getting it done, something comes up. Well, tonight I was "for sure" going to finish it. And then guess what happened? As I'm putting on the last of the knobs, I realize I'm two short! Wow what a tard!

But I think it's going to be fantastic. AND, it's already sold.

Of course I found this and another tall matching dresser on craigslist (for a steal). Some people just need to get stuff out of their garage! The tall dresser that came with it is in my craft room. Would you believe that one isn't finished either??

I've also been working on these chicken wire frames. I've got a few people that want them. I've got the one hanging by my back door at my house and everyone that comes over wants one! If I keep giving them away...I'll never make my money back!

Tonight, I don't know what my problem was. But I cut three different lengths out of this wire to fit into that frame and EVERY SINGLE ONE was too small.

Maybe today just wasn't meant for crafts.
But hopefully next week that dresser will be done and I can start on the one in my craft room.

The Spindle Leg End Table Redo - Before & After

I'm always amazed at how simple it is to spruce up my home with little effort. I guess it helps that I love painting furniture and re-purposing other odds & ends, but I sometimes can't believe it can be so cheap & easy. 

Take this little end table for example (...and this, this, & this). I think I paid $10 for it awhile back at a local thrift store. Ten bucks isn't too bad when you know it can look $50+. 

My before picture is embarrassing  I had this in my bathroom unprotected from moisture for the last year and it was pretty gross.  It's obvious I store my toilet paper rolls on the bottom shelf...Aaannd never dust. 

I had purchased some black Behr paint at Home Depot awhile back also. It was interior paint and not flat...so I bought it. I think it was $2.50 for a quart. This was the first project I used it on and I must say I love it. It's the ultra premium. I also used it on my black dresser redo - check that out here.

My favorite part about this little end table is the spindly legs. They are a pain to paint, but it is totally worth it.

I finished this end table with an Anne Sloan Clear Wax application and she was good to go.  The wax really helps protect it against the moisture in my bathroom. Now I just have to remember to dust it once in awhile.
