I Bought A Paint Sprayer {A Review}

A few weeks ago I purchased a new paint sprayer. We had several interior doors that we needed to paint and I knew the sprayer would do the job well. Plus I've been wanting to try a sprayer out on my furniture. So it was a win win situation.

I figured a gallon of paint would do all 8 interior doors we had. Especially because it's a paint/primer in one. And an expensive $34 per gallon paint. I was really wrong....

Well, as you can see there was a LOT of over-spray. I'm not sure if I was doing it wrong or what, but this stuff was all over the place. And god forbid the wind shift my way.

It ended up getting all over me. ALL over me. And all over my yard. Oh, and I managed to get some on the house too!

The painting part was much quicker though, and I really like the way it covers without streak marks of a brush. BUT there are a couple of disadvantages in using a paint sprayer.

For starters, that gallon of paint/primer only got me 4 doors into the project before I had to go buy another gallon.

Second, the weather has to be just right to go outside to use the sprayer. I could never use it inside because of the over-spray. I've found that his has put several of my projects on hold, when I could have just painted inside by hand.

The doors did turn out really nice and we are happy with them. But I think the use of the sprayer is going to be limited to really large projects.

So, I'm back to painting with a brush lol. I would be interested to hear what others have to say about using a paint sprayer!

  1. I've never used a spray gun - but I can tell you I painted 8 doors - 2 coats each - both sides - by hand - Charcoal grey ( nearly black ) with one gallon!!!
I always thought it took less paint when using a spray gun???
    They look beautiful though :)

    1. I had thought that's all I would have needed was one gallon. There is an adjustment for heavier or lighter spray, but the lighter you go, the longer you sit there going over the area. Maybe if I would've spent $400 on an industrial sprayer I would've saved paint? lol

  2. Oh my goodness thank you for posting this! I have been thinking about getting a sprayer since we are going to paint our deck and then I could use it for furniture. I would want to use it inside but there is no way for me to do that if I have to protect the entire area from over spray!
I also thought they used less paint than painting with a brush.

    1. You're welcome :)

Maybe if you set up an area in your basement for spraying...that would be ok? I tried to do that in my garage, but their is literally no air movement in there and it took four times as long for my stuff to dry :(

By my experience alone, I would say a sprayer does NOT use less paint :( Darn it.

  3. I haven't used a sprayer, but I was talking to my paint guy and he told me that you waste about 30% of your paint in a sprayer due to overspray, etc.. Given how much paint you said landed on your lawn, feet and house...I guess it kind of makes sense. :)

    1. ....Anndd....who wants to waste 30% of their paint!?! lol Not me!!! But spraying does save you a ton of time. I guess we can't have our cake and eat it to huh?!

  4. Thanks for the real time review of paint sprayer. I do a small amount of DIY stuff and am looking for something like this. Other than the time for cleanup I will seriously look at this now.
